Coffee Production in Uganda

At Rubzy Agri Exports Ltd, our mission is to boost coffee production across Uganda by promoting the generation of clean planting materials, supporting a robust national replanting program, and enhancing the productivity of existing coffee trees. We are committed to encouraging the widespread adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) that help manage pests and diseases while promoting the efficient use of agro-inputs.

Uganda cultivates two main types of coffee: Robusta and Arabica, with a production ratio of approximately 4:1 in favor of Robusta. Robusta thrives in Uganda’s central plateau, while Arabica is predominantly grown in highland regions in the east, west, and southeast. As of 2014, Uganda had an estimated 295 million coffee trees planted over 353,907 hectares. A nationwide coffee farmer registration initiative is currently underway to determine the actual acreage under coffee cultivation and to better understand tree density across the country.

Uganda has emerged as one of Africa’s largest coffee exporters, with an ambitious national agenda focused on increasing both the quantity and quality of its coffee output. In 2020, Uganda was officially recognized as Africa’s top coffee producer and ranked as the sixth-largest coffee producer globally, cultivating both Robusta and Arabica varieties.

Robusta accounts for about 80% of Uganda’s total coffee production, flourishing at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level, particularly in the central region. Arabica, on the other hand, is grown at higher elevations in Uganda’s mountainous zones.

Uganda’s coffee sector reached new heights in the financial year ending June 30, 2020, exporting a record 5.06 million 60-kg bags and earning US$494 million in export revenue. This marked a significant increase from the 4.18 million bags exported in the 2018/19 financial year, which generated US$416 million in earnings.

At Rubzy Agri Exports Ltd, we are proud to contribute to Uganda’s growing reputation as a leading force in the global coffee industry, committed to sustainability, farmer empowerment, and excellence in every bean.
